Cambridge Audio SX-50 Bookshelf Speaker Review

Initial Impressions: Packaging and Aesthetics

Upon receiving my Cambridge Audio SX-50 Bookshelf Speakers, I was slightly perturbed as the shipping box had a small puncture. Fortunately, only the styrofoam corner protectors were affected, causing some damage at one of the corners. However, that did not leave a lasting impression as it was at the speaker’s base and not a big deal. On the upside, the speakers were indeed pleasing to the eyes. The walnut cabinet design was handsome, blending seamlessly seamlessly with my wood veneer hardware. I also had to commend the looks of these speakers – they certainly had a classy look to them and were well-made.

Sound Quality

The Cambridge Audio SX-50 Bookshelf Speakers brought a refreshing, natural sound to my desktop that I’ve been yearning for all these years. These speakers output a clear and beautifully balanced midrange, allowing vocals and instruments to shine organically and effortlessly without any hints of a metallic or plasticky tone. This, quite frankly, is one of the most satisfying midranges I’ve encountered in a speaker so far.

While on the darker side, the treble is smooth and not offensive. This is a nice contrast to the dramatic and broad image expansive these are capable of. The range of frequencies they reproduce without sounding harsh is genuinely remarkable. While not life-like, the soundstage soundstage is impressive for what one might categorize as a budget speaker.

As for the bass, while it does roll off after 50Hz and tends to be a bit light, it isn’t exactly a deal-breaker. It might not deliver earth-shattering bass, but the mid-bass presence gave the overall sound a decent warming vibe. For those craving a more immersive bass experience, pairing these with a subwoofer should do the work. However, remember that the speaker placement can dramatically alter the low end.

Performance with Various Audio Gear

The SX-50s were beautifully mated with NAD and Cambridge Audio gear but did not give the same level of performance with my Yamaha integrated. In my opinion, they even managed to outdo less expensive Pioneer designs by Andrew Jones. Although the midrange was a bit dry, as one might expect from a budget speaker, the SX-50 still proved itself to be a top-value need for additional accessories.

Pairing these speakers with a sub would be an excellent call to achieve optimum sonic performance, considering the lack of heavy bass from the speakers themselves. Foam isolation pads were also good for properly angling the drivers, mainly if used near-field on a desk.

Room Suitability

These speakers are most suitable for a smaller room. When set up in my larger main listening room, they showed good potential but particularly shone as computer speakers in a more confined space.

Reliability and Support

Having only owned the SX-50s for a few days at this review, it may be premature to vouch for their durability. However, I am confident in their longevity based on the solid construction and the assurance from Cambridge Audio’s excellent customer service, which I found very supportive and responsive.

Performance with Different Setups

I tested these speakers primarily with my Windows 10 PC, using the Aiyima A07 amp and Topping E30 DAC, playing music through Spotify Premium. I could enjoy my favorite genres, namely rock, heavy metal, and country, in a way I hadn’t before. The Cambridge Audio SX-50 Bookshelf Speakers performed exceptionally well in my main listening room, as computer speakers, and even in larger rooms, offering a consistently satisfactory experience.
