Dynaudio Special Forty vs KEF LS50: which should you buy?

The KEF LS50 is my pick here, and the margin is not subtle. It leads on sound quality, bass response, midrange clarity, treble detail, design and value for money, and in my listening it reached its best without a heroic amplifier in front of it.

Buy the Dynaudio Special Forty if you already have a strong class-A amplifier, good cabling, and enough floor space to pull a pair of stands well into the room. That is the setup where it stopped sounding thin for me and started producing the rich, room-filling sound it is capable of, with sweet, extended treble that never turned harsh at volume. It is nicely built and the taller 361 mm cabinet has real presence on a stand, though the other pair still edges it on design, build and finish. Budget for the amplifier and the cables, because this speaker will not carry itself on a modest setup.

Everyone else should take the KEF LS50. It is the more revealing speaker in the ways I care about: voices and wind instruments arrive with a lifelike intimacy the Dynaudio never matched, the treble is sharp without being brittle, and the soundstage stays wide and precise without demanding one exact listening chair. Its low end is accurate rather than thunderous, so add a subwoofer if you watch films, but for music I rarely wanted one. The shorter 302 mm cabinet suits small rooms and desktops, the 5 yr warranty is more than double what the Special Forty offers, and in my rooms it sounded convincing on a low-powered amplifier rather than needing a big class-A partner.
