JBL Arena B15 vs JBL Stage A180: which should you buy?

For most rooms and most budgets I would take the JBL Stage A180. It leads in every area I compared, from bass and midrange to treble and design, and the wider 20 to 225 W amp range and 5 year warranty only widen the gap.

Buy the JBL Arena B15 if the room decides the speaker. At 470 mm it sits on a shelf or hangs on a wall using the built-in keyholes and the wire channel behind it, and that is something a 1000 mm tower cannot do. The midrange is smooth and articulate, the 1 inch tweeter is slightly bright in a way that suits dialogue and acoustic music, and for a home office, a bedroom or an exercise room it does plenty for the money. Go in knowing two things: it stops around 100 Hz, so plan on a subwoofer if you want full range, and at 86 dB with a 20 to 100 W range it prefers a real amplifier over a token one.

Everyone else should buy the JBL Stage A180. It is the stronger speaker on sound quality, bass, midrange, treble and design, and it still asks less money per unit of performance, which is a rare combination at this level. The 2.5-way layout with two 6.5 inch mid-woofers reaches 40 Hz without help, the 90 dB sensitivity and 20 to 225 W range leave headroom for a large room, and dialogue stays clear as the volume climbs. Two caveats: the 6 ohm load asks a little more of a budget receiver, and pushed hard the treble can turn slightly hard. Five years of warranty against one is the closing argument.
