Buy the Acoustic Energy 301 if you listen in a small to medium room and care most about hearing into a mix. Midrange clarity is its strongest suit and its treble edges ahead too, articulate and detailed without turning sharp, so vocals and acoustic textures separate cleanly. At 300 mm tall and 12.1 lb it sits on a shelf or a stand without taking over a room, the build feels solid, and the design gap here is the one wide one. It also holds the bigger lead on value for money, which matters if the amp and sources are still to come. The catch is scale: in a large space it runs out of authority, so plan on a subwoofer rather than treating one as optional.

Choose the JBL Studio 180 if the room is larger or if the low end is the first thing you notice. It takes the bass response win, narrowly, and a 3-way tower with a 6.5 inch mid-woofer moves more air than any compact 2-way can. Its 89 dB sensitivity makes it a slightly easier partner for a modest amplifier, its tweeter stays clean and non fatiguing over long sessions, and the midrange comes through vibrant with no muddiness. Two things to weigh before committing: both cabinets are identically tuned, which can skew imaging in a two channel setup without a centre, and my sample arrived with packaging that had clearly been through something.
