KEF Q950 Floorstanding Speaker Review
Introduction
As a seasoned audio enthusiast, I took the plunge with the KEF Q950 floorstanding speakers, and I must say, the experience has been awe-inspiring. Giving this 'KEF Q950 review' is my way of sharing the joy and occasional quirks that the journey of exploration has offered me. The Q950s, based on various reviews, promised outstanding sound quality and versatile placement, two features that resonate with my needs. Not all speakers in my living room setup sound good, but these were quite a promising gamble. And yes, it did pay off.
Build and Design
Moving to build quality, the Q950s boast a practical and elegant design. They are indeed a presence in any room, but not necessarily distracting. However, some may feel that the vinyl wood finish may not appear authentic, and the plastic rings around the speakers could have a better fit. These, however, are minor issues that do not take away from their phenomenal acoustic performance.
One feature worth mentioning is their closed-box nature, which makes them incredibly flexible for placement. I have used these in an open-plan living area with awful acoustics, but they still performed impressively.
Outstanding Sound Quality
The KEF Q950's audio performance, above all, floored me. The accuracy of sound reproduction was remarkable. However old my ears are, I could perceive the highs, mids, and lows in striking detail. The tonal balance was perfect; bass, midrange, and treble all delivered impeccably. Surprisingly, it rendered a wide soundstage, considering my less-than-ideal space. I must emphasize the proverbial fact from different reviews that the Q950s are as good as your sound source. Incredible with hi-res Amazon music but not quite the same with older mp3 files.
Forgiving of Room Placement and Acoustics
One of the standout qualities I have deciphered from my KEF Q950 review is its placement flexibility. My living room is particularly challenging, with variable ceiling heights, odd corners, and niches. Regardless, the KEF Q950s belted out an audio quality I did not think conceivable in such a complex environment.

The Need for Power and a Subwoofer
Although the KEF Q950s have a sensitivity rating of 91db, which suggests they can work well with modest amplification, my experience was best when I cranked up the power. These speakers need ample power to give you the best of their capabilities. On the other hand, you might want to purchase an additional subwoofer for the bass freaks. The inbuilt ones are okay but may not go as low as you might prefer, a matter some reviewers and I seem to agree on.
The Physical Look
The Q950s are indeed pleasing to the eye. I bought mine in Walnut, and they look classy. However, I was slightly taken aback by minor cosmetic flaws, notably that the plastic rings around the speakers don't fit flush. The inconsistencies made the speakers look less luxurious than their price tag would suggest.
Shipping Concerns
A drawback to consider is that the speakers might get damaged during shipping. My set was delivered just fine, but I have encountered instances where other customers complained about damaged surfaces due to rough handling during transportation.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Outstanding sound reproduction and clarity
- Beautiful, wide soundstage
- Flexibility of placement in varying room conditions
- Physically attractive
Cons:
- Power hungry - need for a good amplifier to actualize full potential
- Low-end bass might feel lacking to some listeners
- Minor cosmetic inconsistencies
- Potential shipping damage
Conclusion
The KEF Q950 speakers are a commendable investment for any serious audio enthusiast. The sound quality, forgiving nature with room placement, and aesthetic appeal qualify them as must-have speakers for any discerning audiophile. There are, however, a few caveats to be aware of. Power supply, bass levels, and potential damages during shipping also need to be considered. I'm thrilled with my purchase and believe this is one of the best alternatives before venturing into the premium category.
