Dynaudio Emit M20 vs KEF LS50: which should you buy?

For most listeners I would take the KEF LS50, and it is not a close call: it leads on sound quality, midrange clarity, treble detail, design and value for money, and a five year warranty backs that up.

The Emit M20 makes sense if you want a larger box doing the work. The 6.69 inch mid-woofer and the taller 356 mm cabinet give it a physically bigger presentation, and the sound is forward and fast in a way that suits contrapuntal jazz and ambient electronica. Craftsmanship is good, and the minimalist look disappears into most rooms rather than dominating them. Two cautions before you commit. The upper midrange runs bright, particularly on a receiver driving its 4 ohm load, and the low end is leaner than the cabinet size suggests. Pair it with a controlled, slightly warm amplifier, audition it in your own room first, and note that cover runs to two years.

The KEF LS50 is the one I would buy for a small or medium room where accuracy matters. The coaxial driver puts voices and wind instruments right in front of you, the treble is sharp and richly detailed without turning brittle, and the whole presentation stays musical instead of clinical. It is transparent enough to expose a weak source or a mediocre amplifier, so budget for the chain around it, although a 25 to 100 W window and an easy 8 ohm load keep amplifier matching simple. Bass is accurate rather than earth shaking, so add a subwoofer if you want films to move air. For everything else, it is the more complete speaker of the two.
