KEF Q350 vs KEF Q950: which should you buy?

For most rooms and most budgets I would take the KEF Q350. It edges the bigger floorstander on sound quality, treble detail and design, pulls clearly ahead on bass and value, and gives up only midrange clarity in return.

Buy the KEF Q350 if you have a small or medium room, a pair of stands, and a listening seat you actually sit in. It covers far more ground than its size suggests: bass that is tight, punchy and present enough to carry a system without a subwoofer, treble that stays detailed and warm rather than brittle over a long evening, and a textured finish that reads as more considered than most of what sits near it. It asks for care in return. Placement is fussy, the sweet spot is fairly centred, and guitar heavy rock at high volume can harden a little. Accept those two conditions and very little at this level feels like a compromise.

Go for the Q950 when the room is large, awkward or open plan and you want the sound to fill it rather than sit between two stands. It reaches lower on paper, plays louder, carries a higher sensitivity rating, and holds its composure at volume in a way a standmount cannot. Its midrange clarity is the clear win here, so dialogue, voices and acoustic instruments stay lucid even in a space with bad angles and odd ceilings, which is why it makes such a convincing film speaker. The catch is appetite. It wants a properly capable amplifier before the transparency and that enveloping, cinematic soundstage turn up, some listeners still add a subwoofer for the deepest octave, and the finish details do not always live up to the rest of the speaker.
