Sennheiser HD 569 vs Sennheiser HD 280 Pro: which to buy?

For most listeners I would buy the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro. It takes bass response, build quality, noise isolation and value by clear margins, and it edges ahead on treble detail and on soundstage and imaging too.

The HD 569 is the one I pick for long, seated listening. It owns the midrange by a clear margin, with vocals and acoustic instruments sitting forward and uncluttered, and it takes overall sound quality by a narrow step. Comfort is its real advantage: 300 g on the head, plush padding and enough room that I can stay in them for five hours straight, glasses on. At 23 Ω it also plays loud straight out of a phone or laptop with no amp involved. The catch is construction. The foam strip on my headband started lifting inside a year and the cable held onto its packaging kinks, and build is where this pair scores worst by a wide margin.

If the headphones have to survive a bag, a studio, an office or a commute, buy the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro. Build quality is far ahead, the earpads are replaceable when they wear, and the passive seal shuts out more of the room, which is why it is the pair I take on a plane or into a shared space. Low end is the other clear win, punchy and full without going boomy, and the treble and the imaging edge ahead as well, so mixing and gaming hold up as readily as music. It wins value outright too. Accept the trade-offs: 490 g on the head, a tight clamp for the first few weeks that loosens with wear, and warm ears after a long session.
