Sennheiser HD 569 vs Sennheiser HD 599: which to buy?

For most listeners the Sennheiser HD 569 is the stronger buy, taking sound quality, midrange clarity, comfort, isolation and value by clear margins. The HD 599 is still worth choosing, but only if you specifically want an open-back headphone.

Buy the closed-back one if you listen in rooms with other people in them, or want a single pair that handles everything. It leads on sound quality and midrange clarity by a comfortable stretch, and its bass is controlled rather than bloated, though I would not call it a bass-forward headphone. Comfort is where it really pulls ahead: plush padding, sensible clamping force, and five-hour sessions that end without pressure points, even over glasses. Passive isolation is respectable for a sealed design and enough to keep ambient noise out of quieter passages, and its 115 dB max SPL and 23 ohm load make it easy to drive from a phone or laptop. Two caveats worth knowing: the foam headband strip can work loose over time, and the cups do not fold flat.

Choose the HD 599 when the open-back format is the point. It is the lighter of the two at 250 g, the ear pads are firm and velvety and large enough to swallow the whole ear, and the airy presentation suits gaming, podcasts and long vocal-led listening at home. Its published frequency response runs to 38.5 kHz, and the 50 ohm load means it responds well to a proper amp. Understand what you give up: the open back leaks audibly above modest volumes and lets the room in, so it is a poor fit for offices, planes or shared spaces. Left-right panning was slightly uneven in surround testing, and the supplied 2.5 mm cable is the weak link, so budget for a replacement.
