Verdict

Which should you buy?

The Dali Speakers Oberon 3 is my pick of these two: it edges ahead on sound quality and midrange clarity, and it leads by a wider margin on treble detail and design.

If music is the main event in the room, this is the pair to buy. The 7 inch mid-woofer and the broad, well organised soundstage give it a presence that smaller cabinets struggle to match, and vocals and guitars are rendered with real precision and a lush quality. High frequency resolution is the biggest single gap between these two, so acoustic recordings, strings and cymbals gain the most. It is also the better looking speaker by a wide margin, with a white satin finish and seamless corners that suit a living room rather than a desk. Budget some time for placement and EQ, because certain vocal registers can turn slightly boxy and unrefined recordings can sound a touch sharp.

The Elac Debut B5.2 makes more sense if you want low end weight without adding a subwoofer. Its bass is punchier and tighter than the size of the cabinet suggests, and it holds that composure across rock, pop, jazz and classical. I would also choose it for a desktop or a home theatre rack, where the 5.25 inch mid-woofer and matte black finish earn their keep. It responds clearly to changes in amps and DACs, so it rewards a little system tinkering. The treble leans bright, though, and without a treble control on your receiver that sparkle is harder to tame. Both speakers are excellent value at their respective prices, so the real choice is top end refinement and looks against bass punch in a smaller box.
