JBL Arena 180 vs JBL Studio 580: which should you buy?

The JBL Studio 580 is my pick here. It leads sound quality and bass response by a clear margin, edges ahead on midrange clarity, treble detail and value, and leaves the Arena 180 holding a single win on design.

Buy the Arena 180 if the speaker has to look as good as it sounds and you tend to listen loud. It takes design by a clear margin, and the wood veneer cabinet feels like furniture rather than a black box in the corner. The trade is that it wants effort. At low volume it sounds thin, and the highs are more directional than I expected, so seating position and receiver setup matter. Sending the low frequencies to it properly helps, but a powered subwoofer is the honest fix if you want weight under movies. An 8 ohm load and a 20 to 225 W amp range make it undemanding for a mainstream receiver, and one year of warranty cover is the least generous part of the package.

Everyone else should take the JBL Studio 580. It is the better listener's speaker: the soundstage is transparent enough that instruments seem to occupy the room, and it holds that clarity at normal volume instead of needing to be pushed. Bass is the stronger of the two, though it still rewards room treatment and the supplied baffles, since close wall placement turns it resonant. Treble is lively and can read as forward on bright material, so it suits people who want detail over warmth. The plastic feet screwed into MDF are the weak point and mine needed attention early. Set against that, a 90 dB sensitivity, a five year warranty and the narrow value win make it the easier speaker to live with long term. Check your amplifier is comfortable with a 6 ohm load first.
