JBL Studio 180 vs JBL Studio 580: which should you buy?

For most listeners I would take the JBL Studio 180. It leads on sound quality, midrange clarity, treble detail, design and value for money, and the only aspect it concedes is bass response, by the narrowest of margins.

Buy the JBL Studio 180 if music is the main event. Its advantage in midrange clarity and treble detail is the clearest gap between these two towers, and that shows up as vocals sitting forward without muddiness and highs that stay sweet through long sessions. A published 45 Hz to 22 kHz response, an easy 8 ohm load and the lighter 38.6 lb cabinet make it the simpler speaker to place and to drive. Two things to know before you commit: both cabinets are tuned identically, so focus can pull slightly to one side in a two channel system with no center channel, and my packaging arrived in poor condition.

The Studio 580 is the pick for home theater and for rooms where scale matters. It takes bass response, narrowly, and its 90 dB sensitivity, 6 ohm load and 200 W power handling suit a bigger amplifier and a bigger space, where the taller 1069 mm, 48.9 lb cabinet earns its footprint. Treble is sparkling and full of detail, though it leans forward enough that soprano range material can turn sharp, and the low end needs the supplied baffles plus some distance from the wall before it settles into something accurate. The finish is the weak point, with plastic feet screwed straight into MDF, one of which started to detach on arrival. Caught below full retail that is easy to forgive; at full price I would think harder.
