The Dynaudio Emit M10 immediately presents itself as an accomplished performer in affordable speakers. My initial attraction to this speaker brand came around when I had been on a fruitless search for Excite X14s. I'm genuinely pleased I bought the Emit M10s, as they have become essential components in my home studio.
Premium Build Quality
The first thing that struck me about this humble speaker was its excellent build quality. Unlike many affordable models, the Emit M10 did not feature cheap faux wood grain vinyl. The industrial design pattern was invitingly robust, reassuring me of their longevity. Overall, the speaker appeared very solid, akin to a tank, speaking volumes about Dynaudio's attention to detail regarding aesthetics and quality.
A Dynamic Sound Spectrum
Delving further into my Dynaudio Emit M10 review, the sound character leans toward the warm side of the audio spectrum. Initially, I employed these speakers as a secondary pair of passive studio monitors for quick mix checks. Powered by a budget-friendly Samson 120a amp in stereo releasing roughly 55W RMS at 6 Ohms, the M10's sound output remained quite impressive. The speakers offered a flatly honest, refined, and agile performance, which was impressive yet generated a lower scale attributable to its size.
To my pleasant surprise, the Emit M10s proved quite versatile. Their depth and authority dramatically improved after pairing them with a more potent amp and using them in different scenarios. For the casual music listener, the mildly euphoric tonality may not hold much significance, but it made a huge difference for an audiophile like me. However, after replacing the PS Sprout 100 with a higher-end amplifier, the speakers burst into life, offering smoother, silkier vocals, extended bass, and a broader soundstage.
Room and Positioning Considerations
This compact bookshelf model performs incredibly well in smaller spaces. The Emit M10s sparked quality, clear midrange and highs that filled my 500sq ft room nicely. That said, they do need decent power for the best experience. At first, I thought they were a little heavy in the low-end spectrum. I later discovered that they require a bit of distance from the front wall of the listening area to keep the low end from overwhelming the overall sound - a minor inconvenience.
Shortcomings and Workarounds
Despite the glowing praises in this Dynaudio Emit M10 review, it has its set of limitations, like every product. The Emit M10s lack the extra bit of slam needed for high-energy rock music. This shortcoming is easily remedied by supplementing them with a subwoofer for added weight and more expansive octaves.
In small rooms, controlling the bass can be a challenge due to bass reflections. However, Dynaudio foresaw this drawback, and these speakers come with a foam piece and a port at the rear to neutralize bass reflections.
