Sennheiser HD 4.30 Headphones: A Comprehensive Review

Introduction

This Sennheiser HD 4.30 headphones review is based on my personal experience and views about the product, with all its highs and lows. Combined with insights from other users to give a real-world perspective of the product, this review ensures a holistic understanding of what you can expect when buying these headphones.

Design and Build

Sennheiser headphones are made predominantly of plastic, but don’t get it wrong — they look and feel solid and far from flimsy. The matte plastic, subtly accented by metallic grey on each side of the headband, gives it a chic and understated aesthetic. The inside of the headband is thoughtfully lined with rubber, and even though it has minimal padding, it does not put much weight on the head, making it comfortable to wear for extended periods.

The ear cups of these headphones rotate and pivot smoothly, ensuring easy adjustments for a good fit. However, the headphones do feel bulky, with their size being noticeable in the corner of your eyes. Despite this, they fold up nicely, making them travel-friendly.

Comfort and Fit

The leatherette ear pads are cushioned generously, providing a lot of comfort. They do have a narrow oval shape which might be an issue for some users with larger ears, like myself. However, the cushions’ plushness makes up for this, ensuring that the headphones remain comfortable even during prolonged use. Interestingly, they fit perfectly over glasses as well.

It’s important to note, though, that these headphones don’t breathe very well, i.e., they tend to make your ears warm after a while. Moreover, the cushions show the oils from your skin quite visibly — it’s not a deal-breaker but something to bear in mind.

Remote Control and Mic

The cable has a nifty flat design that helps keep it tangle-free. There’s a handy 3-button remote for easy playback control and a microphone for voice calls. The buttons don’t feel cheap at all and the use of the mic is a treat — it provided excellent call quality, with the voice coming through loud and clear on both ends. However, you might need to adjust your speaking volume as the headphones do a great job of blocking outside noise.

Sound Quality

The sound quality is where Sennheiser truly shined. These headphones are equipped with 32-millimeter drivers and a closed-back design that delivers rich, dynamic bass while blocking out external noise. There’s a noticeable emphasis on bass, which I found invigorating in pop and rock music.

The headphones do not compromise on detail in the mids or highs when delivering powerful bass. Movies, especially action ones, felt incredibly immersive. The mids have an admirable presence and the vocals come clean, while the highs are brilliant without causing fatigue after long listening sessions. The soundstage is wide and open, with a good sense of depth. Best of all, they can get loud without distorting the sound!

Comparisons and Pricing

Comparing them with other Sennheiser models, like the 420, does not yield any significant difference. The sound quality of both models is excellent. The headphones work perfectly well with PCs, contrary to their advertised compatibility with just iPod, iPhone, and iPad. These headphones might be the best deal in terms of price-to-performance ratio if you can get a used one in good condition.

Verdict

Despite some of the minor downsides, the Sennheiser gives you a lot for under $100. The headphones are a perfect blend of excellent build, comfort, and sound quality, with a touch of portable convenience. They have raised the bar high for headphones in this price range, and they are indeed a product worth considering.

Bass Response
8.8
The headphones display an emphasis on bass, which is weighted and responsive. The bass hits hard but does not come across as boomy. The kick drum feels punchy, and deep bass music will leave listeners pleasantly surprised. However, the bass does not overpower the overall sound; instead, it adds more impact.
Treble Detail
8.2
The headphones maintain a good amount of detail in the highs, especially considering their price range. They deliver brilliant highs that are not fatiguing, even after long listening sessions. Although there might be a preference for brighter sound among pickier listeners, these headphones provide overall satisfactory performance in the treble detail.
Midrange Clarity
8.7
The Sennheiser HD 4.30 handles the midrange frequencies well. Vocals and instruments come across as clean and natural sounding. In genres such as pop and rock, everything feels more powerful without losing any detail in the mids.
Sound Quality
8.6
The Sennheiser HD 4.30 produces an astounding sound quality. The 32 millimeter drivers and closed back design deliver rich dynamic bass while blocking outside noise. The bass has more of an impact without sacrificing detail in the mids or highs, making pop and rock music really shine. The mids have a good amount of presence and vocals are clean. There is also adequate detail in the highs, remaining brilliant but not fatiguing even after long listening sessions.
Comfort & Fit
7.9
The headphones offer a considerable degree of comfort. They have a good fit, thanks to rotating and pivoting ear cups which are loaded with plenty of cushioning. The headband also comfortably houses a minimal amount of padding and the headphones don’t put much weight on the top of the head. Some users, however, might find the oval shape of the earcups a little uncomfortable, especially if they have larger ears.
Build Quality & Durability
8.3
The Sennheiser HD 4.30s are well-built for headphones primarily made of plastic. They feel solid and do not have a flimsy design. Features like a rotating and pivoting mechanism for the ear cups add to the premium feel. Some users have mentioned the noticeable bulkiness of the headphones, and oily marks from skin easily showing on the cushions as minor drawbacks.
Soundstage Imaging
8.5
These headphones surprise with the soundstage they offer, demonstrating a nice, wide, and open feel with a good sense of depth. This positions the Sennheiser HD 4.30 as an exceptional choice for experiencing an immersive sound field.
Noise Isolation
8.5
The Sennheiser HD 4.30's closed-back, over-the-ear design does a good job of blocking outside noise, lending the headphones quality noise isolation capabilities. The snug fit, contributed by the thick cushioning, further enhances the noise blocking. However, due to excellent noise isolation, being aware of one's speaking volume during calls might be challenging.
Value for Money
9
Considering the sound quality, comfort, and the overall features offered by these headphones at the price point, we think they offer great value for money. According to some users, they are among the best headphones one could get for under $100.

Rating Summary
The Sennheiser HD 4.30 headphones offer great sound quality packed in a solid build. They stand out with their rich dynamic bass, maintaining detail in the mids and the highs, and deliver an immersive sound field with a wide and open feel. However, listeners with a preference for bright sound may find the emphasis on the bass and the overall sound not as appealing. The headphones fit comfortably due to the rotating and pivoting ear cups that are loaded with cushioning. Although they come across as bulky and the oval shape of the ear cups might not sit well with users with larger ears, the headphones still remain comfortable. The solid construction employs a good deal of plastic but feels premium, and the closed-back design offers quality noise isolation. The Sennheiser HD 4.30 headphones, with all their features and sound quality considering their price tag, provide good value. They are indeed a strong consideration for headphones under $100.
